17 New Year's Resolutions Every Homebody Should Make
It’s time to party. Maybe. If we don’t stay too late.
I will stop making up excuses to cancel plans.
Will last until: You get a Facebook invite for a bar crawl and suddenly remember you have laundry to do.

I will stay at a party for longer than 20 minutes.
Will last until: There are more people you don't know than you do. Can't we just chill at someone's apartment?

I will go to a club at least once this year.
Will last until: LOL THAT'S NEVER HAPPENING, SORRY.

My New Year's Resolutions: Be Kinder, Care More, Slow Down
In 2014 I want to feel more connected. Because it’s too easy to forget why we’re here.
I took this photo of the Griffith Observatory on a hike with a close friend. More like this in 2014, please.
I've spent too much time being overly critical of other people, but most of all of myself. My default in the past has been to find faults quickly, and I think this has held me back in some ways because it becomes too easy to focus on the negative. In 2014 I want my default to be kindness.
In the past I've been quick to adopt an aloof posture — mostly, I think, towards things that I felt were outside my grasp, like a job or a guy. But this year I want to be more forthcoming about admitting when something means a lot to me, and not be afraid of how I'll feel or how others will respond if it doesn't work out.
Granted, this one might be tough, given that I work for an online news organization where speed is the currency of the realm, but I think what I mean is I want to savor and appreciate things more, and not always be rushing off to the next thing. I want to stop and smell the literal and figurative roses.

The Best Australian Films Of 2013
Not everything we watch is American. Just most of it…
The Great Gatsby
Directed by: Baz Luhrmann
Written by: Baz Luhrmann (screenplay), Craig Pearce (screenplay), F. Scott Fitzgerald (based on the novel by)
You knew it would be here. Whilst the film itself divided opinion on both over-zealous production and truthfulness to the book (which, let's face it, is always an issue with movie/books) it was still Australia's most successful film of the year. If the purpose of film as a medium is to influence and effect the masses, then Gatsby delivers - the myriad of fashion blogs and party themes associated with it a testament.
With a blockbuster cast many would hesitate to associate with Australian Film, Gatsby conquered. Whether we want to admit it or not.

The Rocket
Directed by: Kim Mordaunt
Written by: Kim Mordaunt
A fantastically interesting Australian film which recently took out the "Best Debut Feature" at the Berlin Film Festival, The Rocket is unique in that it does not have many of the stereotypical tropes associated with Australian film. Gone are the red deserts and Akubra hats, instead replaced with the vegetation dense landscape of Cambodia. The Rocket is the most unique Australian film of both 2013 and the past couple years.

13 Works Of Nonfiction And Memoir That We Loved In 2013
More books are being published than ever before — how can you possibly decide what to read? Here are a few nonfiction titles that we loved in 2013.
The titles below are the works of nonfiction and memoir that BuzzFeed staff members and contributors couldn’t put down this year (in no particular order). What are yours?
Chris Ritter / BuzzFeed
Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward
Jesmyn Ward's Men We Reaped is finely chronicled memoir of a grief that is unending and wide reaching. As Ward recounts the story of her family and her childhood in the rural South, she also remembers five young men in her life, including her brother, who died far too young and without cause. These young men, and those who survived them are shown, understandably, as victims of place, poverty, race, and circumstance. Men We Reaped is both heartbreaking and thought provoking and the power of the prose overwhelms in the best possible way.
Recommended for: Anyone who wants to understand the complexities of race and poverty in contemporary America as inextricably linked to matters of the heart.

Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe
Marvel Comics stable of superheroes — Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Avengers, and so on — have come to dominate pop culture through hugely successful film franchises, but there was a time when the publisher was just a scrappy underdog staffed by wildly imaginative oddballs, stoners, and obsessive craftsmen. This meticulously researched book reveals the office politics and economic pressures that shaped the history of Marvel's fictional universe, and offers valuable insight into the minds of the writers and artists who have created some of the most iconic fictional characters of all time.
Recommended for: The superhero fan who wants to know the secret origin of everything.

Love & Terror on the Howling Plains of Nowhere by Poe Ballantine
One of the best road writers of his generation, Poe Ballantine lays stakes in a quiet Midwest town after years of restless wandering. With a new family, new neighbors, but the same talent and heart his fans have come to expect from his writing, Ballantine investigates a murder that rocks his new hometown of Chadron, Neb. Part true crime, part family drama, and part hilarious yet heartwarming send-up of small-town life, Love & Terror on the Howling Plains of Nowhere is all Poe Ballantine, and Poe Ballantine at his best.
Recommended for: Anyone who has ever sworn they would never settle down, whether they have yet or not.
