Fairfax Media reports "Jake" who appeared flanked by ISIS fighters in images circulated at the end of last year, was from a non-Muslim family from Melbourne's suburbs.

The Daily Mail had previously dubbed the 18-year-old "Britain's white jihadi" and said his recruitment was a "coup" for ISIS fighters in Syria and Iraq.

The report also reveals "Jake" was part of an accelerated program at Craigieburn Secondary College for talented students but dropped out last year and bought a one-way ticket to Istanbul.
