The incident at the weekend comes after three students drowned in the River Wear in the last year and a half.

Two Durham students have been helped out of the River Wear after falling in during a night out in the city centre.

Two Durham students have been helped out of the River Wear after falling in during a night out in the city centre.

Durham police said two male students fell into the river shortly after midnight on Saturday after falling over a small wall while "joking around".

The students, both 19, were able to pull themselves out of the river but had to be helped up the muddy rover bank by staff at the nearby Boat Club bar.

The Northern Echo reported that the students were from Durham University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton and had been on a night out.

Three Durham students have drowned in the Wear in the last year and a half, leading to calls by students for better safety measures along the river and the police and local authorities to wage war on what they see as an unsafe drinking culture.

"I saw a pair of trainers go up in the area and back over a wall," Thompson said. "I thought: 'That's a student.'

"I ran down the stairs and shouted to Olly and he followed. I expected to find one student, but there were two."

Thompson said he and Tims took the students into the VIP area in the bar and got them some dry clothing before an ambulance crew turned up.

Police said neither of the students were injured, but both received fixed penalty notices for causing alarm to members of the public.

BuzzFeed News has contacted Durham University for a statement on the incident.
