The most open secret in TV has finally been announced, that Sherlock will return to UK screens on January 1 2014.

The news was confirmed by a hearse driving round London today confirming the return date. This is because the episode is called The Empty Hearse, a pun on the Conan Doyle story The Adventure Of The Empty House, in which Holmes returned from "the dead" after his tumble with Moriarty.

Two years after the devastating effects of The Reichenbach Fall, Dr John Watson has got on with his life. New horizons, romance and a comforting domestic future beckon.
